Pakistani Behind Failed NYC Bombing Sentenced

A Pakistani-born U.S. citizen who tried to bomb New York City's Times Square has been sentenced to life in prison.

A federal judge in New York sentenced 31-year-old Faisal Shahzad Tuesday.

Shahzad pleaded guilty in June to 10 counts of weapons and terrorism charges. In court papers filed last week, prosecutors said Shahzad picked a spot in the busy entertainment district where he felt the bomb could inflict the most damage.

Prosecutors said if Shahzad not been captured, he planned to detonate another bomb in New York City two weeks later.

Europe travel alert

The State Department alerts U.S. citizens to the potential for terrorist attacks in Europe. Current information suggests that al-Qa'ida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks. European governments have taken action to guard against a terrorist attack and some have spoken publicly about the heightened threat conditions.

Force confirms Al Qaeda senior commander killed

The International Security Assistance Force confirmed a precision air strike in Kunar province Saturday killed Abdallah Umar al-Qurayshi, an Al Qaeda senior commander who coordinated the attacks of a group of Arab fighters in Kunar and Nuristan provinces.

The Al Qaeda facilitators and extremists he worked with throughout the Middle East directly threaten the safety and security of Afghan civilians. He routinely facilitated the travel of foreign fighters, including Arabs, into the region.

White House to award Medal of Honor to first OIF/OEF living recipient

Thursday, President Obama spoke with Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta to inform him that he will be awarded the Medal of Honor for acts of gallantry at the risk of his life that went above and beyond the call of duty.

Giunta will be the first living servicemember to be awarded the Medal of Honor for service in Iraq or Afghanistan. The President thanked Sergeant Giunta for his service and extraordinary bravery in battle.
