Dedication to Lao Veterans

May 13, 2011 at Arlington National Cemetery, Edmund McWilliams a retired senior US Foreign Service Officer having served 27 Years, many in service in South East Asia, offered the dedication below for those who served in the Lao theater of the Vietnam War. Mr. McWilliams also served in the US Army 1970 - 1073 including some 11 months in Vietnam. Below is his statement read at Arlington National Cemetery by Mr Philip Smith of the Centre for Public Policy Analysis.

ISAF Joint Command morning operational update

A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed two insurgents, including a Taliban leader by the name of Abdul Baqi, and detained one suspected insurgent in Sayed Abad district, Wardak province, yesterday.

Abdul Baqi commanded a Taliban cell that conducted improvised explosive device attacks and road blocks along Highway 1 targeting Afghan forces. Reports indicated he was gathering intelligence for suspected attacks targeting Afghan government employees. He also facilitated IED operations in the district.

1st Cav takes over in Afghanistan

During a pivotal time in the war on terror and in Afghanistan's history, Regional Command-East's command authority shifted from Combined Joint Task Force-101 to CJTF-1.

At a transfer of authority ceremony May 19, 2011, held on Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) handed the reins of command over to the 1st Cavalry Division.

Route Clearance Patrols: Making roads safe, checking them twice

It’s 12:30 a.m. about 15 minutes into the patrol. The streets are quiet and the lights are off in the local area. Suddenly, a bright flash appears, and a shockwave that can be felt through body armor hits the soldiers. A rush of adrenaline flowed through their bodies. The driver of the second vehicle speeds up to assess the damage, and medics rush in. Fortunately, the soldiers are not injured.

A buried 155 mm artillery round blew a large hole through the front tire of the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle, rendering it immobile.

On the road again: Army, Marines team up to deliver supplies

Getting supplies to and from forward operating bases can be difficult due to the rugged terrain of Afghanistan and the imminent enemy threat.

However, the Route Clearance Platoon from Joint-Task Force Paladin provided Marines with Combat Logistics Battalion 8, 2nd Marine Logistics Group (Forward) with a clear path during the latest resupply mission to FOB Shukvani, May 10 through 15.

Linguists ‘Essential Part’ of Female Engagement Team Mission

CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan — Members from both the U.S. and U.K. Female Engagement Teams met for training at the Afghan Cultural Center here, May 16.

The purpose of the meeting was to share information, advice and experiences, as well as discuss and highlight the importance of embedding female linguists with the teams. The Marines on the U.S. FET have been in Afghanistan for nearly two months, giving them knowledge they passed onto the U.K. FET, who just recently arrived in Afghanistan.

The Socialist Republic of Vietnam (SRV) has unleashed attack helicopters on unarmed Vietnamese civilians and those suspected of participating in mass rallies involving an estimated 8,500 Viet-Hmong protesters, including thousands of Catholic, Protestant Christian and animist religious believers seeking human rights and land reforms.
