Afghan, coalition force target Haqqani leader in Paktiya province

A combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted a security operation in Zurmat district, Paktiya province, May 3, searching for a Haqqani network leader who had intended to attack the Paktiya governor.

During the operation, insurgents engaged the security force and the Afghan and coalition force responded. he battle resulted in numerous insurgents killed, one civilian killed, and several civilians wounded.

U.S. forces who attacked Osama bin Laden's compound were operating under rules of engagement that made it likely he would be killed, U.S. officials concede.

The Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday after saying Navy SEALs had orders to capture the al-Qaida leader if he gave himself up, U.S. officials later acknowledged the assault force was ordered to accept a surrender only if its members could be sure he didn't have a bomb hidden under his clothing and posed no other threat.

Grenade Attack Kills Policeman After Turkish PM Rally

A police officer has been killed and another wounded in a grenade attack following a political rally by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in northwestern Turkey.

A police car accompanying a bus carrying officials from Mr. Erdogan's Justice and Development Party came under attack by unknown gunmen Wednesday in the city of Kastamonu. The attackers threw hand grenades at the vehicle and sprayed it with bullets, causing it to catch fire.

Russian Security Forces Kill Al-Qaida Emissary in Chechnya

Russian security forces say they have killed a top al-Qaida emissary in Chechnya.

Russian officials said Wednesday Doger Sevdet, who was also known as Abdulla the Kurd, directly participated in planning and organizing major sabotage and terrorist attacks targeting members of the public and security forces in the North Caucasus.

Authorities say Sevdet and a fellow militant from Dagestan were killed in a special operation by Russian security forces. Sevdet was reportedly carrying a Turkish passport with visas for Georgia, Azerbaijan and Pakistan.

Governor to Challenge Venezuela's Chavez in 2012

The governor of Venezuela's Miranda state says he plans to run for the presidency next year, challenging President Hugo Chavez.

Governor Henrique Capriles made the announcement Tuesday, saying he wants to be "president of all Venezuelans." Capriles also said he would seek the endorsement of a divided opposition to challenge President Chavez, who has been in office since 1999 and is seeking a new six-year term.

An opposition primary is scheduled for February 2012, with the presidential election set for later in the year.
