The government of Lebanon told citizens to discard their pagers in wake of explosions that killed or wounded
The Hezbollah terror group says it does not know what caused its members’ pager devices to explode September 17 in Lebanon, but it blames Israel for sparking the detonations.
At least eight people were killed, some 2,800 wounded, and the Iranian ambassador to Lebanon was injured when pagers exploded simultaneously on Tuesday, according to multiple reports.
The incident occurred shortly after Israel’s Shin Bet security agency said it foiled an assassination attempt on an Israeli ex-senior defense official.
Hezbollah said in a statement that three people were killed in what it called “mysterious” pager explosions. It added that a number of pagers used by its members were detonated in the “simultaneous” explosions.
The pagers were the latest models that Hezbollah imported into the country in recent month, according to Reuters, citing three unidentified sources.
A foreign source sent a photo of the devices to Soldier of Fortune, to include information on the manufacturer and model type. Soldier of Fortune contacted the company, and did not immediately receive a response.
A Hezbollah member, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that the explosions were the “largest security infiltration” the group had faced in the past year in its conflict with Israel.
The Lebanese Health Ministry issued a statement asking all citizens to immediately discard their pagers. The statement also called on all hospitals to be put on high alert.
Hezbollah says it holds Israel “fully responsible” for the coordinated detonations.
