Americans in Sudan Told to Shelter in Place After Diplomats Evacuated

As more countries safely evacuate their diplomats from Sudan, American citizens who are stranded in the conflict-ridden African nation have been told to continue sheltering in place amid the violence.

Some 16,000 Americans are registered as being inside Sudan, plus many others who have not registered. The stranded Americans do not have access to U.S. government help via the embassy, because the facility has been shuttered and its staff evacuated.

VOA’s Veronica Balderas Iglesias examines the options being considered to provide support to those left behind amid ongoing fighting between Sudan’s armed forces and a paramilitary group.
