Fort Bragg is Back, With a New Take on Name for Storied Army Post

Are name changes in the works for other military installations that were renamed under the Biden administration?

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on Monday night signed a memorandum renaming Fort Liberty in North Carolina to Fort Roland L. Bragg.

The storied North Carolina post was renamed Fort Liberty in 2023, during an effort under the Biden administration to remove names that honored Confederate leaders.

The new name pays tribute to Pfc. Roland L. Bragg, a World War II hero who earned the Silver Star and Purple Heart for his exceptional courage during the Battle of the Bulge, the Pentagon said.

Hegseth signed the memo while flying aboard a C-17 from Joint Base Andrews to Stuttgart on February 10, 2025, according to DoD Press Secretary John Ulyot.

Observers wondered whether this is the first in a series of name changes for other military installations that were renamed under the Biden administration.
