The Navy released a first look at exterior damage to the USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75), following a collision at sea near Port Said, Egypt.
The Truman collided with merchant vessel Besiktas-M on Feb. 12. The aircraft carrier is the flagship of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group (HSTCSG). It is on a scheduled deployment in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations supporting U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa to defend U.S., Allied and partner interests.
The incident occurred at 11:46 p.m. local time. Most of the visible damage occurred on the starboard side, near Elevator 3. The photo from the Navy shows damage to the underside of a sponson, a gun platform that projects from the side of the ship.
According to the U.S. Navy, the incident did not cause any flooding or injuries aboard the Truman. The incident is being investigated.
